Annie,

Like the whole world, I mourn the passing of your husband yesterday, or as I like to say, the day he ran
out of time. As you know better than anyone, he didn’t walk on the moon as so many mistakenly thought, but he certainly left huge footprints on this earth nonetheless, ones that I think will loom even larger in the era of small men controlling Washington. I wish I could be there to hold your hand as you and the Senator did for me when my Mother died while we were on a trip to Asia. I will always remember you changing your plans so I would not have to travel home alone. It is part of why I remind myself every day how lucky I am to have known the both of you. Repaying the debt of gratitude, I owe would take two lifetimes

For now, please know I am only a telephone call away to help in any way I can, even if it is just to talk. I know your kids are there for you, but I would be honored for you to lean on me too.

With love and affection,

Best regards.

Carl
